Facebook Bumps Orkut From Top Spot In India: Facebook was on its way to overtaking Orkut to become the most popular social  networking site in India. Recent research from comScore has revealed that Facebook  managed to bump Orkut off the top spot in July 2010.According to comScore statistics, Facebook  had 20.9 million unique users in India in July 2010, compared to 7.47 million in July 2009, while Orkut had 19.9 million users in July 2010 and 17.7 million users in July 2009. While both networks have shown growth in the last year, Facebook’s 179% growth far outstrips Orkut’s 16% growth rate.

Free Recharge Code Scam Targets Orkut Users

Scammers are tricking Orkut users into pasting malicious JavaScript code in their browser's address bar, with the promise of receiving a free recharge code for their mobile phones. Users who fall for the scam end up with their Google login credentials stolen.

It all starts with users receiving a link on Orkut that takes them to a website displaying a big banner that reads: "Recharge your mobile here!" According to information presented on this page, the user will receive a free recharge code in their Orkut scrapbook if they copy and paste some JavaScript code into the address bar.

Facebook was recently in a big mess over privacy and Orkut is probably trying to gain some user love there. Today, Orkut has launched private scraps feature enabling users to send scrap just to their friend(s)  the scrap being invisible to the outside world.

To keep something secret, just send a private scrap to your friends, and just those people selected will see it. Yep, just them! Recipients can also reply, creating a completely private conversation. Orkut is taking the privacy game too seriously and each feature/piece of your content now has a privacy level. Orkut has also enabled auto-sharing of your YouTube activities on Orkut. So do all these privacy settings bring back the users? What else should Google do to Save Orkut?

I just had a look over what was happening with Google’s Orkut which was one of the most popular social networks in India and Brazil. It seems like things have changed and it has lost its majority user base to the largest social network  Facebook.According to Alexa  Orkut is almost dead as compared to it was an year back. It has lost a massive number of users who previously used to keep visiting the website after every few minutes.

But still they are in the game, the website still receives millions of pageviews every day which is enormous and it is still one of the top rankings websites in the world. Also we have not seen Google placing more importance over its social network.

Orkut for Android AppOrkut Team has released an Android App for all the orkut fanatics out there. This Android App sports many features like: 1. Live Folders:  You can now create a list of your favourite orkut friends.

As a live folder on your home screen through which you will be able to browse through your friends list even when there is no data connectivity. It also allows you to communicate with your friends via call, scrap or SMS in a single click.

To install a live folder, just visit “Menu > Add > Folders > Orkut” on your Android device’s homescreen after installing the application. 2. Photo uploads to your orkut albums: You can now directly upload photos from your Android Photo Gallery onto your Orkut Photo Albums.
