SOCIAL NETWORKING: ORKUT – GOOGLE’S SOCIAL NETWORKING WEBSITE

Posted in : News

(added 1 days ago)

Are you interested in meeting new people online?  How about people that share the same interests as you? If so, one of the best ways to find those individuals to use online social networking websites.  Social networking websites are often compared to neighborhoods or communities, but ones that are online. If are interested in making use of these popular websites, if you haven’t been already, you will need to find a social networking website to become a member of.  One of the websites that you may be interested in joining is Orkut.

Orkut, sounds interesting doesn’t it?  With other popular websites such as Yahoo! 360, Friendwise, Classmates, and MySpace, there are many who wonder how Orkut became the name of this popular online community.  Orkut is named after the individual who created it.  That man was an employee of Goggle and he is known as Orkut Buyukkokten.

If the name of the website doesn’t automatically draw you in, there is a good chance that the website features will. Like many other social networking websites, Orkut has a number of different member benefits. These benefits are what makes it worthwhile to become a member of this popular social networking website. As popular as Orkut is and as much as you would like to join, there are special procedures that you must follow.  Unfortunately, Google does not allow just anyone to become a member, you must be invited.

Current community members are the only ones who can extend you an invite.  This means that you should not waste your time trying to convince Google to let you join.  Being invited to join Orkut really isn’t as difficult as it may sound.  Orkut is so popular that there is a good chance that you know someone, if not personally than online, who can extend you an invite.  By performing a standard internet search, you should also be able to find Orkut members who would be willing to extend you an invitation, without even knowing who you are.

Although many internet users refrain from joining Orkut, just because of the invitation requirements, there is a good reason for limited membership.  Orkut is a social networking website that is free to use.  Unfortunately, free means that many people would wish to use the website. Many online social networking sites, that are free to use, have literally become ridiculous.  A large number of internet users get joy out of creating fake accounts and causing online controversy.  Google decided to make Orkut a special membership online website to prevent instances like that from happening.

Orkut, like many other online social networking websites, has a number of different purposes.  Of course, the main purpose of Orkut is to allow you to connect with your friends, especially the ones that have extended an invitation to you, but you can do much more than that.  Once a member of Orkut, you can easily familiarize yourself with other website members who share the same interests as you do.  This will not only help you make new friends, but it may also result in the finding of your next romantic partner.  That is what is nice about Orkut, once you are a member, just about anything is possible. If you are interested in learning more about Orkut, before trying to obtain an invite, you will want to visit their online website.

Google Launches Deeper YouTube Integration on Orkut

Posted in : News

(added a month ago!)

Google Launches Deeper YouTube Integration on OrkutGoogle has just launched a nifty little YouTube app within its original social networking site, Orkut. The company announced its decision via Orkut’s official blog in English and Portuguese. Now Orkut features a YouTube widget which allows users to listen to music playlists while browsing through the network’s profiles and communities.

After typing in a name of an artist you like, the widget will automatically start playing videos and sharing your activity with your friends on Orkut. Although the feature works with different kinds of videos and playlists, the music that is selected are will be relevant to your search parameters. The versatile Orkut based application allows users to watch videos in either a small or large format and it even offers users the option of minimizing the widget with the music still playing in the background.

Given that Google’s newer social networking site, Google+ already has YouTube integration, the concept is nothing new but what is interesting is that Google is yet to give up on its original social network even after Facebook overtook Orkut in the only country where it was leading the charts with number of members, Brazil. For now things seem to be going ahead with Orkut, but given the large expansion that Facebook is also going through who knows what lies ahead for Google’s original social networking site.

HootSuite integrates with Google’s ‘other’ social network Orkut, and continues Brazil offensive

Posted in : News

(added a month ago!)

HootSuite App Directory now includes Google’s other social network Orkut, the social dashboard company announced on its blog. As the Canadian startup points out, this new feature is targeted at Brazil, which is the country where the vast majority of Orkut users live.

HootSuite integrates with Google’s ‘other’ social network Orkut, and continues Brazil offensive

The announcement isn’t exactly a surprise; as we reported in February, HootSuite is now available in Brazilian Portuguese, and we already knew that Orkut integration would soon follow. In practical terms, it means that you don’t have to leave your dashboard anymore to update your Orkut account and read posts from your friends:

To install the app, all you have to do is to visit the Tools section of HootSuite and click on App Directory in the Launch Bar. It is worth mentioning that Orkut is only one of a growing number of HootSuite apps, from popular platforms like YouTube and Tumblr to specialized options such as TrendSpottr and GetSatisfaction.

Beyond HootSuite’s global app strategy, this integration is also part of the company’s recent push towards Brazil: Today’s blog post also contains interesting details on HootSuite’s decision to integrate with Orkut. As we pointed out in our previous story, the once-dominant social network has lost its leadership in Brazil, which made us wonder if HootSuite’s move was still relevant. Yet, the startup insists that it spent months listening to feedback from its local users, before deciding to go for what suits them best:

Based on recent conversations with local insiders, we are still skeptical on claims that Orkut has 66m active users, as time spent on the network seems to have fallen lately. On the other hand, Google Brasil apparently hasn’t given up on Orkut and keeps on introducing new features, from an iOS app to community themes.

No matter where the truth lies, we have to acknowledge that it’s hard to see how this integration would hurt. Ultimately, HootSuite has very little to lose here, and it seems little effort compared to the opportunity to please its Brazilian users.

It is also worth noting that HootSuite opted for a progressive rollout; phase 2 of Orkut integration is already in the works, and the company will likely listen to feedback to select and implement additional features.

Google: Orkut Will Co-exist With Google+

Posted in : Gossips

(added few months ago!)

Google's other which has been around for about seven years and has tens of millions of users worldwide, will continue to operate alongside the new Google+ for now.

However, Google is leaving its options open regarding the possibility of fusing the two through some sort of integration further down the road.

"Orkut and Google+ are different products, and will both exist. Over time, we'll determine what makes the most sense in terms of integrating these products," a Google spokeswoman said via e-mail, when asked what the future holds for Orkut.

At this point, it's not clear whether Google will provide a mechanism for Orkut users to export their friends list and profile data to Google+, or add Google+ privacy features to Orkut.

With Google+, the company is hoping to make a run at Facebook with a social networking site whose privacy features are tighter and easier to configure.

Google is betting that while Facebook is the dominant player in social networking, enough of its users feel uneasy about its privacy controls that they would be willing to switch to a rival that offered them an improvement in that area.

In its design, Orkut, launched in 2004, is generally similar to social networking sites of that generation, including Facebook, MySpace and Friendster.

Orkut ranks in the 102 spot in Alexa.com's list of most popular websites in the world, but most of its users are India and Brazil.

As the Google+ project shows, Google clearly felt that it needed to create a new social networking site from scratch in order to give Facebook a run for its money in the U.S. and around the world.

It will be interesting to see if the company opts to continue operating the two sites in parallel in the long term, or whether having Orkut becomes strategically contradictory as Google preaches its new privacy approach with Google+.

The good news for users of Orkut is that there seem to be no imminent plans to shut it down. "We will continue to invest in the product," the spokeswoman wrote.

Time Warner agrees to acquire Orkut

Posted in : News

(added last year!)

Time Warner Inc. said yesterday that it had agreed to acquire Orkut in a stock deal valued at $5.0 billion, giving Myspace a close rival for the title of the nation's largest operator of social networks. The move is the latest in an aggressive social networking strategy by Time Warner.

In a meeting with analysts yesterday, Time Warner's chairman, James L. Barksdale, indicated that the deal signaled the company had completed its strategy of "clustering" social networks in particular areas. Once the Orkut deal is complete, Time Warner will have a user base of 2.2 million Orkut accounts. The 2.2 million accounts of Orkut, which is based in Mountain View, California, would give Time Warner a total of 2.2 million Orkut accounts. Time Warner said yesterday, in announcing the acquisition, that it was now entering the social networking field.

To pay for the acquisition of Orkut, Time Warner will issue 4.5 million shares of common stock, and 7.25 million each of two new series of convertible preferred stock, with a liquidation value of $500 a share, convertible into a total of roughly 24.54 million shares of Time Warner common stock at a price of $48 a share. It will also assume Orkut's $3 billion in debt.

Also yesterday, Mr. Levin told analysts that the company was still working on a restructuring that would put its cable systems into a separate entity. Perhaps more important, the restructuring is intended to allow the company to regain control of its Warner Brothers studios and Home Box Office cable channel, both of which, along with most of its cable holdings, are now part of Time Warner Enterprises, a subsidiary in which the company has sold significant minority stakes to U S West Inc., the Toshiba Corporation and C. Itoh & Company.

While Mr. Levin said a final deal was still 12 to 18 months away, it was the first time he had publicly confirmed the rumored restructuring. Time Warner also reported strong operating earnings, before taxes, interest, depreciation and amortization, for its fourth quarter in all its core businesses.

What particularly pleased some analysts was an improvement during the quarter in the profitability of the company's cable systems cash flow, to $247 million from $242 million, despite cable reregulation. The company said new subscribers, pay-television subscribers and advertising revenues had helped lift profits. Time Warner's stock jumped $1.25 yesterday to close at $39 in trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

David Londoner, a cable analyst for Wertheim Schroder, attributed a lot of the stock movement to Mr. Levin's apparent determination to restructure. "They had not said anything officially until yesterday, when they acknowledged that they were aggressively moving to restructure," he said.

Andrew Marcus, who follows cable for Alex Brown, said that the stock also benefited from the financial results. "It was the fastest-growing quarter on anearnings basis since the second quarter of 1993," he said.

Mr. Levin reiterated the company's determination to sell some nonstrategic assets to cut debt, mentioning its 20 percent stake in Turner Broadcasting Systems and 200,000 nonstrategic cable subscribers as well.

Time Warner has already indicated a willingness to sell its stake in Turner, which amounts to 54 million shares, but never with a more determined intent to do so. Reaching an agreement has proven difficult, however, because of the tax consequences it might trigger for Time Warner, which acquired the stock at relatively low prices. Mr. Levin indicated that he might prefer to swap assets.

Fitch and Moody's Investors Service reaffirmed Time Warner's investment-grade debt ratings, despite the $3 billion in debt the planned Orkut acquisition will bring with it. A Time Warner spokesman noted that the ratio of debt to cash flow was affected only slightly by the acquisition. And he added that the rating agencies also took into account the company's plans to restructure and sell assets.

Fourth-quarter earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization rose 9.4 percent, to $844 million. Time Warner's entertainment-related divisions all reported record results. Profits at the music business jumped 16 percent, to $251 million. Revenues for the division increased to $1.303 billion from $1.024 billion. The film division's profit increased 13 percent, to $109 million, and revenues rose to $1.39 billion from $1.31 billion.
