Farmville helped Facebook beat Orkut

However, in May this year, Facebook beat Orkut as the top social networking destination in India. Mumbai-based agency Komli Media’s Vizisense, which tracks web audience measurement in India, has now come out with some answers to how Zuckerberg’s creation triumphed over the Google-owned Orkut.

According to the latest data by Vizisense, social media ‘apps’ (short for ‘applications’) like Farmville, Mafia Wars, Cafe World have been the biggest contributors to Facebook’s success in India. Farmville clearly leads the pack and other apps are now following suit.

Orkut users under phishing attack

Orkut users have lately been targeted with a clever scheme that redirects them to phishing pages without them having to do anything except visit a compromised account.

Using malicious applications that were made available in the Apps Directory, the phishers let the users do the dirty work themselves. Attracted by possibilities such as being able to watch TV channels online, users would add the application to their profiles and, from then on, every person that would visit their profile would get automatically redirected to a phishing page. According to a Kaspersky Lab expert, this was possible because the source code of the applications in question contained instructions to run external code that is not hosted on Orkut servers.

What happened to Orkut?

With the emergence of social networking, it seems like Orkut has taken a back seat as Facebook gains immense global popularity attaining 500 million active users now. Facebook is now providing users the ability to integrate and link their accounts with Orkut. This will allow users to share updates, pictures, links and notes with others. Additionally, Facebook users will be able to find their Orkut friends on the site. This could be extremely fatal for Google’s social networking site as a user can now broadcast from Facebook and spend more time there while still connected to friends on Orkut.

Facebook’s growth rate has been much higher if compared to Orkut. It has gathered great recognition in India and users are always increasing. Only in Brazil, Orkut retains its lead. It has 29 million users compared to Facebook’s 9 million. But it is Facebook’s unstoppable growth rate that is taking social networking to another level. According to comScore, Facebook has grown by 479 percent in Brazil compared to 30 percent for Orkut last year.

Orkut continues to lead Brazil's social networking market

Score Inc has released a study on social media usage in Brazil during the month of August 2010. The study found that Orkut continued to lead Brazil's social networking market, reaching more than 36 million unique visitors (15+ years of age, home and work environments only), while Facebook grew to nearly 9 million visitors, up from just 1.5 million visitors a year ago.Twitter.com also witnessed strong growth, nearly doubling its audience to 8.6 million visitors, with Brazil leading the world in terms of Twitter's Internet user penetration at 23%."Social media accounts for nearly 20% of Brazilians' time spent online, making it one of the top online activities in the country," said Alex Banks, comScore managing director for Brazil and vice president for Latin America. "As the ninth largest Internet market in the world and one of the fastest growing, Brazil offers global marketers large and growing opportunities to reach consumers, with the social networking market representing one of the most efficient ways of doing that.

Orkut might be losing its mojo in Brazil

Orkut remains a mystery to most analysts when it comes to its popularity in the Brazilian market. While Orkut has started to lose to Facebook in India, it remains the dominant social networking service in Brazil. However, things are changing… Facebook is growing at a faster rate and it might not be far away when it overtakes Orkut in Brazil too. It would however take sometime…  The different at the moment is pretty staggering. Orkut saw 36 million unique visitors last month. Facebook in comparison saw 9 million visitors. Man held for posting fake Orkut profile of his wife

A Delhi-based IT engineer was today arrested for allegedly posting a fake Orkut profile of his wife with obscene remarks, police said.Bharat Vats, a resident of Vasant Kunj, has been taken into custody following investigations into a complaint by his wife, also an engineer, that some one had posted her profile in social networking site 'Orkut' with "obscene remarks", a senior police officer said.His wife had filed the complaint on September 25.Investigations revealed that the man had done the act to defame his Noida-based wife and procure custody of their two-year-old son, the officer said.The couple got married in 2007 and went to the US and stayed there for two years. However, differences cropped up between them and they returned to India in 2009. Since the last six months, they have been living separately, the officer said.

In a shocking incident, a vengeful man created his former wife's Orkut profile, complete with her mobile number and her parent's address, where she is currently residing, to defame her. The matter came to light, when the unassuming victim started getting vulgar calls, some even international ones, seeking sexual favours.

Harassed by the offensive phone calls, the victim's brother lodged a legal complaint under section 156 of the CRPC against the man, identified as Shekhar, at the Mahesh Nagar police station on Saturday evening.
