Facebook Bumps Orkut From Top Spot In India: Facebook was on its way to overtaking Orkut to become the most popular social  networking site in India. Recent research from comScore has revealed that Facebook  managed to bump Orkut off the top spot in July 2010.According to comScore statistics, Facebook  had 20.9 million unique users in India in July 2010, compared to 7.47 million in July 2009, while Orkut had 19.9 million users in July 2010 and 17.7 million users in July 2009. While both networks have shown growth in the last year, Facebook’s 179% growth far outstrips Orkut’s 16% growth rate.

Google's Orkut loses market share to Facebook in India, too

Orkut, the social networking site from Internet search giant Google is continuously losing its market share across the world. Even in countries like Brazil and India where it has a huge following, Orkut is losing to other popular social networking sites like Facebook. Even micro-blogging sites like Twitter are giving Orkut's dominance in India a tough time.

According to Google Trends, a site that compares daily traffic between different websites, the number of visitors to Facebook has gone up since June while the same for Orkut is falling. The rise of Facebook in India is mainly attributed to users from Maharashtra and Delhi.

People from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Punjab and Gujarat are using Facebook more than Orkut. Madhya Pradesh is the only place out of the top ten states ranked by Google Trends, where there is a neck-to-neck fight between the two social networking sites.

Orkut About To Fall To Facebook In India

For all the grief Google gets for not understanding social networks, people often forget that it owns a pretty big one, Orkut. While Orkut is much smaller than Facebook worldwide, it does dominate in at least two large countries: Brazil and India. But that soon may change.

India looks like it is about to fall to Facebook. In May, 2010, Facebook attracted 18 million unique visitors in India, compared to Orkut’s 19.7 million (comScore). In the past year, Facebook grew 177 percent from 6.5 million Indian visitors, compared to 35 percent growth for Orkut. When the June numbers come out, Facebook may very well surpass Orkut in that country. Indeed, Google’s own Trends for websites shows Facebook edging out Orkut in India last month.

Free Recharge Code Scam Targets Orkut Users

Scammers are tricking Orkut users into pasting malicious JavaScript code in their browser's address bar, with the promise of receiving a free recharge code for their mobile phones. Users who fall for the scam end up with their Google login credentials stolen.

It all starts with users receiving a link on Orkut that takes them to a website displaying a big banner that reads: "Recharge your mobile here!" According to information presented on this page, the user will receive a free recharge code in their Orkut scrapbook if they copy and paste some JavaScript code into the address bar.

Facebook was recently in a big mess over privacy and Orkut is probably trying to gain some user love there. Today, Orkut has launched private scraps feature enabling users to send scrap just to their friend(s)  the scrap being invisible to the outside world.
