Orkut Team has released an Android App for all the orkut fanatics out there. This Android App sports many features like: 1. Live Folders:  You can now create a list of your favourite orkut friends.

As a live folder on your home screen through which you will be able to browse through your friends list even when there is no data connectivity. It also allows you to communicate with your friends via call, scrap or SMS in a single click.

To install a live folder, just visit “Menu > Add > Folders > Orkut” on your Android device’s homescreen after installing the application. 2. Photo uploads to your orkut albums: You can now directly upload photos from your Android Photo Gallery onto your Orkut Photo Albums.

Just click “Menu > Share > Orkut” after installing the application.   3. Scrap Notifications: This application also supports Scrap notifications. i.e. if you get any new scraps on your scrapbook, a notification will appear on your Android device notification bar, which on clicking will lead you to your scrapbook page.

 Google has announced the launch of Android on Orkut. Presently this application is available as a free download on Google Android Market. This service will enable users to upload photos, sync with their relatives and friends, via status messages and phone numbers.

The social networking site Orkut is very popular in India and Brazil. This is the first social networking website introduced by Google. For the installation of orkut for Android application, the user just needs to visit the Android Market from Android device and search “Orkut”.

Facebook and Twitter are considered the easiest to use social networking sites but a substantial number of Internet users feel that no social networking sites are easy to use, according to new findings released today.

The social network usability poll, carried out by user experience consultancy, Webcredible, revealed that 50 per cent of respondents considered Facebook the easiest-to-use social network in a result that perhaps represents the popularity of Facebook rather than its actual user experience.

TataDoCoMo, which came into the limelight with their pay-per-second billing plans and marketing blitz, has now expanded its BuddyNet service to include free GPRS access to social networks Orkut, Facebook, Twitter and Nimbuzz, apart from professional networking site LinkedIn.Embedded applications and external URLs/Links will be charged at Re. 0.1/kb), and users will have to pay to subscribe to BuddyNet.

Angered by the dressing-downs from his parents, a college-goer had walked out of his home in 1998. His family filed a police complaint, which was moved to the dossier of unsolved missing cases a year later. A few months ago, a relative of the youth found a profile in social networking website Orkut. It looked like that of Jimmy, son of V V Koruthu of Pathanamthitta in Central Kerala.

Koruthu had filed another missing complaint with the police this January. After a month’s search in the cyber world, the state police traced Jimmy to Chennai and handed him over to his family on Tuesday. According to state cyber police inspector E S Bijumon, this was the first incident in Kerala of a missing man being traced via cyber investigation.

Since the missing youth’s profile appeared on Orkut, the police handed over the case to the cyber cell. While the police located the Internet café from where the profile was created, the cafe was found shut. It then identified the IP address of the computers used to log on to his Yahoo id. They then found the café in Chennai where Jimmy came for surfing. The cafe had his snapshot, address and mobile number. The police finally found Jimmy working as a call centre executive in Chennai.

Orkut is losing it’s market share in India – and not in terms of absolute traffic, but purely on interest/intent of users. Picture is worth more than a thousand words – so take a look at Google trends data , which showcases the trending of search result on Google.The inflexion point occurred towards the end of 2009 and what’s interesting is the consistency of Facebook search volume as opposed to Orkut, which is dwindling.The writing is on the wall.

Note On Google Trends It’s not that Facebook has beaten Orkut in absolute traffic – there still is a long way to go. But, Google Trends gives you an idea about the ‘trend‘, the intent of users and it’s surely oscillating towards FB. It’s just a matter of time. What’s your take?

Google has released a chrome extension for Orkut. The extension allows you to search for friends, directly jumpto their profile pag , check scrap count etc.

Orkut is losing its command as the Social network of choice in India. Lately, there have been a lot of arguments on why Orkut is sliding (read: Orkut vs. Facebook in India) and what it should do to come back again.

Here is adding 2 more points to the same: 1. Do not allow changing names: Names are a permanent field for everyone.

Who use silly special characters in the name and hence destroy the experience for everyone else following them. 2. Release the User Profiles in Google Search: If you currently search for any name on Google there is sure chance that either Facebook, Linkedin or Twitter profile will come on top.
