LONG, LONG ago (in terms of Internet time), there was a virtual country named Orkut. It was a wild country where ‘frands’ and ‘sheep’ ran wild. Stalkers stalked and talkers talked in a visceral mishmash of puerile conversation and voyeuristic voyages across profiles. There were more scraps than metal. It was a turbid torrent of young Indian expression, a parent-free outlet for the high pressure libido locked up by conservative society. The nation of Orkut had but one motto — to knock the marble from the Goli soda of pent-up adolescent energy. It was free. It was unsanitary. It was glorious.

THE GENIE OF the Orkut is back. This time with the untimely murder of a teeneger by his own "Orkut" friends. It is not the first time the social networking site has been dragged into the limelight. Few months back, thanks to Shiv Sena’s call to ban the Google’s social networking site it was in the news. At that time the Shiv Sena alleged that certain ‘communities’ have been using this common platform (Orkut) for insulting the party Supremo Bal Thackeray and Maratha idol, Shivaji.

Google's Orkut loses market share to Facebook in India, too

Orkut, the social networking site from Internet search giant Google is continuously losing its market share across the world. Even in countries like Brazil and India where it has a huge following, Orkut is losing to other popular social networking sites like Facebook. Even micro-blogging sites like Twitter are giving Orkut's dominance in India a tough time.

According to Google Trends, a site that compares daily traffic between different websites, the number of visitors to Facebook has gone up since June while the same for Orkut is falling. The rise of Facebook in India is mainly attributed to users from Maharashtra and Delhi.

People from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Punjab and Gujarat are using Facebook more than Orkut. Madhya Pradesh is the only place out of the top ten states ranked by Google Trends, where there is a neck-to-neck fight between the two social networking sites.

For all the grief Google gets for not understanding social networks, people often forget that it owns a pretty big one, Orkut. While Orkut is much smaller than Facebook worldwide, it does dominate in at least two large countries: Brazil and India. But that soon may change.

India looks like it is about to fall to Facebook. In May, 2010, Facebook attracted 18 million unique visitors in India, compared to Orkut’s 19.7 million (comScore). In the past year, Facebook grew 177 percent from 6.5 million Indian visitors, compared to 35 percent growth for Orkut. When the June numbers come out, Facebook may very well surpass Orkut in that country. Indeed, Google’s own Trends for websites shows Facebook edging out Orkut in India last month.

Facebook was recently in a big mess over privacy and Orkut is probably trying to gain some user love there. Today, Orkut has launched private scraps feature enabling users to send scrap just to their friend(s) the scrap being invisible to the outside world.

To keep something secret, just send a private scrap to your friends, and just those people selected will see it. Yep, just them! Recipients can also reply, creating a completely private conversation. Orkut is taking the privacy game too seriously and each feature/piece of your content now has a privacy level. Orkut has also enabled auto-sharing of your YouTube activities on Orkut. So do all these privacy settings bring back the users? What else should Google do to Save Orkut?

In the wake of the blasphemy controversy and the Facebook ban in Pakistan and Bangladesh, many Muslims set out en masse to discover new social networking websites such as MillatFacebook and Sal.am to fulfill their online needs. Some of these websites turned out to be Facebook clones, while others were just plain useless.

While many local users resorted to using proxies to access Facebook, I opted to return to my original stalking grounds, Orkut. A short background For those who may have missed the craze in 2004-05, Orkut was an invite only website with a personalized profile where you have all your friends, pictures, testimonials in one place; a strong community-based system where discussions can take place based on the purpose of the community.
